Problems with the touch interface

Platform: Android, iOS, PSVita

  1. Open the inventory by tapping it once.
  2. Press down your finger on the item you wish to use, and wait for it to pop above your finger.
  3. Keep holding your finger down and drag it over the screen to where you wish to use the item (there will be a ‘hotspot’).
  4. When your finger is over the hotspot, the item should highlight yellow while still above your finger.
  5. Let go of the item by lifting your finger from the screen.

You can also use this method to combine two items in your inventory.

Android

Crashes

Crash on opening game

This is possibly an issue with the sound crashing on the device. On Android devices running version 4.1.2 or higher, you can generate system bug reports that contain much more information than a standard crash report to help us track down issues without an obvious cause. To take a bug report, please follow these steps:

  1. Reproduce the issue in Broken Sword
  2. Open the device's Settings screen
  3. Scroll to the bottom, open Developer Options
  4. If this option isn't available, go to About phone instead, and tap Build number (like "JOP40C") 7 times. This will enable Developer Options in the main menu
  5. Tap Take Bug Report
  6. Wait a minute or two, the device is now gathering data and zipping it into a package
  7. A dialog will open where you can choose the program to email the file, send it to support@revolution.co.uk

This relates to a Googleplay asset problem. Please delete the app and attempt to re-download.

iOS

Crashes

General Crash

The problem is related to a memory issue. The game is very demanding in terms of graphics and will crash at key scenes if there isn't enough memory to run it. If the update for some reason does not resolve this, please delete any large files such as movies or unwanted apps from your device. Reboot your device (as per these instructions: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430) and ensure no apps are running in the background when you start Broken Sword 5.

Sound

No sound on iOS

Check the mute switch and volume on the side of your iPad/iPhone/iPod. It sometimes responds differently to different apps.

Linux

Crashes

Crash when interacting with Adam or Fleur in the flower shop/when combining items in the inventory.

This bug has been fixed - please ensure you are running the latest version of Broken Sword 5.

Mac

Crashes

Crash on opening game

It depends on how far the game gets on booting when it fails, but if it gets far enough there should be a "vt7.ini" file in the folder where the saves sit (Library/Application Support/Broken Sword 5 on a Mac). If you edit that there should be a line that says "fullscreen=1". Try changing that to "fullscreen=0" or "fullscreen=2" and then running the game again.

What are the three Full Screen Display settings for?

Basically the three Full Screen modes each try to achieve a full screen image in different ways: The first one asks your computer for a resolution appropriate for the game - for instance, 1280x720. Every driver handles that in different ways - some will give the game what it asked for, others will stretch, shrink, letterbox or otherwise work out how to display the game based on their own logic. This means depending on your set-up the game can look very different. The other two scale the screen to match your current desktop resolution, one preserving the aspect ratio whilst the other simply stretches. For the HD assets, if the game detects you've got a resolution of 1920 x 1080 or higher it will use these graphics, otherwise it will use the normal set.

PC

Crashes

Crash on opening the game from Steam. No error message.

Re-download and install the game again. It may be due to a corrupted file during an interrupted download. If you are running 'ZoneAlarm' firewall on your system, please uninstall it as this prevents BS5 from working. Ensure that all your drivers (video and sound) are updated to the most recent manufacturer’s version.

Freeze and crash during gameplay, no error message (Switchable graphics card)

If you are running two graphics adapter chipsets - a low power, integrated chipset and a high performance, discrete chipset (common on newer Notebook computers) then this may interrupt gameplay during Broken Sword 5. Try changing the graphics mode from 'Dynamic' to 'Fixed' in the settings - or disable one of the graphics cards. This should help ease the problem.

Menu/Hint text turns to gibberish

Search for a file called graphics.vt7a in the folder where you have the game installed. If the file is present, you need to delete it. This will solve the issue.

Game collapses to the task bar during the intro.

This is most often caused by a screensaver - Broken Sword 5, by default, doesn't change your screensaver settings. This means if you have a screensaver set to display after a short period, (such as 1 minute,) it will override the game and minimize it. The easiest solution is to disable your screensaver or change your settings so that the screensaver will not interrupt the longer movies.

The game is only showing part of the screen (Windows 8.1)

This issue can be helped by disabling the display scaling which can be found under the high DPI settings on the BS5 exe.

What is the dead rat called ‘Stretch Goal’ for? It doesn’t do anything?

In keeping with the precedent set by its forbears, the game is full of secrets and “Easter Eggs”. Just make sure you interact with the rat as it triggers something later in the game…

I can’t turn on the lightswitch in Vera Security!

This is not a timing puzzle. You don’t need to try to click the lightswitch while George is still using the match (after all, that would be rather hard for him to do!). The lightswitch is only clickable in the dark after George has lit the match and it has gone out.

I can’t figure out Bassam’s sign!

Remember, the right hand side of the sign is the only part that works – you need to come up with a new shop name that will fit in this lit-up section. If you get stuck, George and Bassam will give you hints in what they say.
